The HTC Vive Pro 2 is the dream of a VR enthusiast. Its 5K-120Hz screen offers the sharpest desktop VR experience I’ve ever seen. And although the design has not changed compared to the model, it is still very comfortable to wear for longer sessions. But its high price and dependence on old controllers make it difficult to sell. And let’s face it, it will cost a lot to dethrone the Oculus Quest 2 at 299 as the ideal VR headset for mainstream users.

However, this is not the goal of HTC Vive. Like the standalone Vive Focus 3, this headset is clearly intended for professionals. But unlike this device, it also has a lot to offer gamers. For them, it would be worth spending 1,399 2 2 on the entire Vive Pro package to play Half Life: Alyx in the best possible quality. And if you have already invested in the previous Vive Pro or Valve index, you can buy the new headset alone for 799.

Just be sure to keep track of which Vive Pro is which, because they seem practically identical. The Pro 2 has a black and purple color scheme, but the bezel, strap and headphones all look the same. However, the difference becomes obvious once you put the Vive Pro 2 on: its 5K screen offers 2,448 x 2,448 pixels per eye, a great leap ahead from the 1,440 x 1,600 pixels of the Pro. In addition, the LCD screens of the Pro 2 have RGB subpixels, which makes everything even sharper. The screen can also be updated up to 120 Hz, which is significantly smoother than the previous 90 Hz panel, and I appreciated the wider field of view of 120 degrees, which makes virtual worlds all the more immersive.

These specifications may seem familiar to you, because the Vive Focus 3 also has the same 5K screen, it just so happens that it has a slower refresh rate of 90 Hz. But I was much more impressed with the Pro 2 because it can easily run any PC VR game or application. The Focus 3, on the other hand, has a limited selection of mobile titles, and I have never managed to stream high-end virtual reality from my gaming PC. And honestly, even though I got this working, Streaming is still a clear step up from native execution.

I revisited old and newer games on the Pro 2 and everything looked fantastic. I kept getting distracted by the detailed environments of Half Life Alyx – a game that looked great on the Index Finger, but got an extra polish with the increase in resolution of the Pro 2. It’s a bit like switching from 1080p video to 4K. you may not notice the difference at first glance, but once you start looking at the finer details like grass and wood grain, you may find that you are working with more pixels.

Coming back to Superhot, it was almost like I was playing Superhot 2. I was able to see a lot more details in the Cyberpunk intro room of the game. And although its aesthetics are relatively simple, the enemies, weapons and environments of the game all seemed more detailed than I remembered. I also spent more time there than I expected, pretty much everything in the VR version of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice becoming in Superhot, it was almost like I was playing Superhot 2. This game already looked impressive on a regular monitor, but in 5K VR I could appreciate Senua’s complex character model even more.

As impressive as all this looks, I really wish HTC had upgraded the controllers on the PAs impressive as all this looks, I really wish HTC had upgraded the controllers on the Pro 2.
